Ski on a budget

Ski Holiday Travel Insurance – Travel GuardBudget breaks are still possible for cash-strapped skiers dreaming of a week on the slopes before the season ends, with Eastern Europe in pole position, according to a new survey.

Everyday holiday costs and currency exchange rates were analysed to reveal destinations to suit every pocket, from bargain to luxury options. Remember Travel Insurance is essential.

In the eurozone, Slovakia is good value because of low local prices and a friendly exchange rate. The fact that sterling is nearly 4% stronger compared to last year means travellers changing £500 holiday money will get an extra €20, according to International Currency Exchange’s ‘Slopeometer’ guide.

The eurozone effect works in France and Austria too, where there is good mid-price skiing for those wanting a traditional resort and short flight. The exchange rate works against British winter sports fans in Switzerland, however, which is 7.5% more expensive than last year.

Splash out on a trip to Japan, Canada or the U.S. and long-haul flights and pricey ski passes send the bill soaring, though a marginal improvement in the sterling-U.S. dollar rate means travellers will get about $22 extra on £500.

The survey reveals Bulgaria has the cheapest après-ski beer, at 50p. Norway and Sweden are dearest, at £4.50.

The price of a meal for one ranges from £7 in Eastern Europe to £13 in the U.S. and £39 in Japan. A six-day ski pass costs under £100 in Slovakia, £172 in France and £335 in the States.

ICE compared prices in budget destinations Zakopane, Poland, Jasna, Slovakia and Bansko, Bulgaria with the mid-range resorts of Courchevel in the French Alps, Kitzbuhel in Austria, Are in Sweden and Geilo in Norway. Luxury holidays surveyed were a week in the Swiss resort of Verbier, Banff/Lake Louise in Canada, Niseko in Japan and U.S. favourite Aspen.
